ERFUNDENE KÜNSTLER | FICTIONAL ARTISTS

Opening 11 February 2011 at 7 pm
Exhibition from 12 February 2011 to 27 March 2011

The exhibition "Fictional Artists" presents 14 artists of the 20 th and 21 st centuries whose lives have been described in fictional works such as novels, narratives and theater plays. They have been singled out because their biographies embody tendencies and artistic norms that have been characteristic for the past hundred years. Take Pietro, for example, a young man of a bourgeois family who joins the agitations of 68 and can escape social restraints only through radical art forms. Or Antártido A. Garay who exhibits daring conceptual art in the Buenos Aires of 1920 which nobody understands. Each character personifies a specific, often exaggerated type of artist. And just like in any art scene, do the smart gallery owner, the scandal awaiting press and the overstrained visitor also exist in the imagined one. All of them together give insight into writers' conceptions about artists and their environment predominant at a certain time. By means of diverse material, like documentary pictures, and press reports, the exposition tries to disclose what might have inspired the authors' ideas. The show offers the opportunity to discover a parallel art world which functions as a mirror to the real history of art and whose protagonists have already been waiting too long for a retrospective of this kind.

The exhibition will be presented in the studio (basement).
