Fotofestival Mannheim-Ludwigshafen-Heidelberg is the biggest curated photographic festival in Germany and has developed into a highly regarded European biennale.
In celebration of its 5th anniversary the Fotofestival has invited the legendary photo agency and photographers´co-operative MAGNUM PHOTOS to be the artistic partner. MAGNUM PHOTOS is one of the world´s most renowned photografic agencies.

Under the title GRENZGÄNGE: MAGNUM: TRANS-TERRITORIESthe curator Andréa Holzherr is going to devise her own concept of the Fotofestival. Inspired by the special geographic characteristics of the Fotofestival - eight exhibition venues, three cities and two German federal states - she will select works that deal with the defence, opening, crossing and interwining of various territories. She will be dealing at the same time with themes such as, for example, home versus uprooting, exile and migration, war versus community.

In the exhibition Battleground / Afghanistan the subject is disputed territories, war and armed conflicts, drawing on the example of Afghanistan. A space-filling fresco of photos from the artistiv partner MAGNUM PHOTOS documents the different phases of the country's war history. The art society's director, Susanne Weiß, has selected further artistic positions.
Selected works from artists as Francis Alÿs, Alighiero Boetti, Aqeela Rezaie, Elfe Brandenburger, Saba Sahar, Sandra Schäfer, the Salasin collection and he Melton Prior Insitute confront the country's current and historical situations from various perspectives.
